Immanuel Community Church

immanuel-community-church

Up until four days ago I had never met anyone from the Immanuel Community Church in Flushing New York. Now after spending Labor Day weekend as speaker for this congregatio’s annual retreat at Camp Deerpark near Port Jervis, New York, Ruth and I feel we have new friends which we will treasure forever.

Mark and Annabelle Perri pastor this amazing multicultural congregation in Queens New York. They truly are “defiant gardeners” effectively planting a visible community of God’s transforming grace in the midst of this confluence of the nations.

Mark recalls that in 2001, at the same congregational retreat, sensing an impending disaster coming upon the city and nation. Now 14 years later he has a similar sense. The congregation spent much of last night in prayer that God would prepare us to be faithful and victorious in these troubling times.

I face this fall season troubled by what may happen but somehow confidently expectant of a mighty manifestation of God’s grace.

And I stand amazed at the way God is connecting His people to work together in this great Harvest Time.

Martin Family Week (Part 2)

The Word of the Lord

As we prayed this morning for Todd and Marita who pastor a church in inner city Baltimore, assisted by Chauncey and Gwen, the life-giving word of the Lord came to all of us.

A very popular TV crime drama series, set and produced in Baltimore, and entitled ‘The Wire’, shows how even good people get sucked into evil systems and patterns so that eventually everything is under a dark, devastating trajectory. “Whether one is a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, all are ultimately compromised.”

In fact, the devil at times attacks our children with the thought that even they, godly people leading a good church, are all under a devastating power that sucks the life and hope out of them.

The devil tries to convince them that not only will their people not be able to escape his clutches but that they themselves and their children will be devastated by the city.

But the word of the Lord proclaims that “all things work together for good to those who love God.” All things, even bad things, evil things, destructive things, even our sins and failures work together under God’s direction for a good outcome.

The word of the Lord is “The favor of the Lord is on our children and grandchildren in Baltimore. God’s cycle is a cycle of blessing, not devastation. Everything is being drawn into the cycle of life and love, of blessing and transformation and redemption.

Lift up your heads with expectation. The glory of the Lord is being revealed in Baltimore. The glory of the Lord will be revealed in the lives of our two daughters and their husbands and of our seven grandchildren in the intercity of Baltimore and in the lives of those in their church and school.

Blessed be the name of the Lord!! It is not about the hopelessness of ‘The Wire’, it is about the power of the ‘Word of God’ to create and to transform all who are drawn into its mighty influence!

Martin Family Week (Part 1)

martin-family-week

The years go by, fifty years to be exact, since Ruth and I said, “I do and I will.” God gave us four children, three daughters and one son. The children have grown and all have children of their own. Now there are 14 wonderful grandchildren, 9 granddaughters and five grandsons, ages 2 to 18. And most importantly each of the children and their spouses know and love Jesus Christ. And each couple longs to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings to a greater extent as they prepare the third generation to hunger after Him and as they actively advance the Kingdom in their respective communities. All are busy and at times stressed and distressed with life’s challenges.

So Ruth and I decided to spend a week with the family for a time of deeper connection and refreshment. We found a house that could contain the 24 of us along Lake Gaston, near Bracey, Virginia, not far from the North Carolina border. We checked in Friday, August 14th and we will check out Friday, August 21st. We “ordained’ our oldest daughter Gwen and her husband Chauncey as directors of the Martin Family Week. As we arrived each person was given a white T-shirt with a logo designed by Elisa Martin, Vaughn and Ilona’s daughter from Belgium. The logo depicts an anchor with the words “ 50 years of unquenchable love, Ruth and E. Daniel, Song of Solomon 8:7. The reference states” many waters cannot quench love.”

It has been a great time of laughing and crying and praying and playing together. The men went “jugging” for catfish. They were successful with the largest of the many fish measuring over 30 inches. There was a notebook design contest led by Hannah, Chauncey and Gwen’s daughter. Ruth led a “Sole Hope” shoemaking party one afternoon. Children and adults cut out denim shoe uppers to send to a ministry making shoes for Ugandan children to keep them from getting the deadly jiggers in their feet. Even the 4 year old, Ian, entered into this activity energetically and productively. Each day two teenagers were assigned to secretly monitor the family for acts of kindness and gratefulness. Each evening the winners were announced along with a description of their behavior which was rewarded with a $5 gift.

There was ample time for swimming off the water trampoline just off the dock at the foot of the hill. Then there was boating, and water skiing and canoeing and more fishing. The labor of food preparation and clean up was evenly scheduled across the family. There was time also for some movie watching in the in-home theatre. On Monday evening we had a grand 18th birthday party for Elisa, which included a piñata in the shape of a guitar, designed and manufactured by her sister Ruby and her grandmother Ruth.

I, as family patriarch, I guess that is what I am at age 71, had a family devotional each morning. And each evening the families took turns in conducting the vesper service. One evening we gave opportunity for each couple to state what was most challenging to them in the past year and then we prayed and gave prophetic words and words of blessing over each one. On another evening Vaughn gave a teaching on the needs of children. Each child needs four things: 1) Love 2) Discipline 3) Protection and 4) The Miracle of God revealing Himself to each heart.

I am spending personal time with each grandchild. and with each of their parents separately, learning of their hopes and fears and praying with them.

We are now half way through the week. Many are presently out on a shopping trip. And I am here, writing this post and extolling the mercies of the Lord.

Healing for the World

Tonight is the night! Tonight we have a Healing and Evangelistic Service at Grace Chapel, 2535 Colebrook Road, Elizabethtown, PA at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome. Just come expecting a miracle.

But why is this meeting so special? The entire Kingdom Life Network (KLN) Impact 2015 Conference since the opening service on Wednesday evening has been special. The Conference was true to its theme: Kingdom Ethics in an Unethical World: Baptize Us with Fire.

And the Fire of His presence has come. Bishop Lawrence Chiles gave a powerful word on Wednesday evening on the importance of knowing Christ. And Thursday morning, 87-year old Don Jacobs, world teacher on leadership development and now continuing to focus on leaving a written legacy, gave a foundational teaching on the Kingdom of God. Young men and young women spoke. A pastor and a lawyer spoke on how the church should position herself in this new legal and social situation. And last evening Bishop Joseph Kamau from Kenya, whom God has used to powerfully impact me and my family, spoke a life-giving word on preparing ourselves for a breakthrough change of seasons. And the worship each session transported us into the presence of God.

And today is going to be special as Alejandro Colindres and Team conduct a retreat day of foundational Christian teaching followed by Spirit- empowered ministry. We expect to see people healed today, saved today, delivered from all types of bondages and filled with the Holy Spirit today. All because the Resurrected Jesus is walking among us. Of course, anyone is welcome to today’s sessions which begin at 9 am and continue till 5 pm.

But why am I so singularly focused on tonight?

Tonight is for the community; it is for the world. It is for unbelievers and pre-believers and not just for believers.

You remember when Jesus walked the roads of Judea, He was focused on bringing the gospel to the nations. He became very angry in Jerusalem one day when he saw how the money changers had taken over the “court of the Gentiles” and turned it into a place for changing money. This court was one place where Gentiles could draw near to God. And now God’s people had actually excluded the Gentiles from this one place where they could draw near to God.

And Jesus was angry that His people had made it difficult for the people who had not known God to draw near and to come to know Him. (This was a point made by Don Jacobs in his lecture on the Kingdom of God).

Now I know why this anticipation for tonight is so strong within me. Meetings to encourage Christians are necessary and important and wonderful. But the Gospel is for the world, and God is always calling “Who will go for us? Who will be one of my harvesters? Who will clear their agenda so the Court of the Gentiles is once again a place where those who have not heard can hear and be impacted by the glorious Gospel of the Kingdom?”

So tonight the Gospel goes forth, not just to the church, but to the world. Tonight the Court of the Gentiles is cleared so that all may come into the presence of God!

May the the church meeting house at Grace Chapel become filled with ‘Gentiles’ tonight. May tonight be the night when those who have not known God, enter into their destiny as sons and daughters of the King, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Come to think of it. I also have been a Gentile. So tonight, I too will draw near!

Deeper Intimacy

deeper-intimacy

Yesterday morning in my prayer walk at dawn I found myself on the banks of the Conewago Creek. It was a beautiful setting: birds were singing lustily, wild geese were finding breakfast in the surrounding fields, a bull frog was occasionally reminding me of his hidden but watchful presence. All this, as the fog was slowly lifting. I suddenly found myself with a strong desire to be down by the creek side instead of observing the creek from an elevated bank. But the brush covered bank appeared unstable and I finally convinced myself that observing the stream from the bank was almost the same as actually being down by the stream.

As I turned to walk away from the bank, still in prayer, I suddenly tripped and fell. As I was falling I had the thought, “I am going to end up head first in this stream.” But instead of that I landed firmly on my knees. As I rested there for a moment I saw that there was a direct and stable way to descend the bank to the creek side. So I quickly made my way to the stream’s edge. As I touched the edge of the water with my sneakered foot the urge to be in the stream returned and I stepped into the middle of the stream.

As I stood in the stream I sensed God saying several things to me:

1.” I do not want you to be satisfied to just observe what I am doing, I want you to be in the center of the river that proceeds from the throne of God. I want you to move into a deeper intimacy with me. (Observing the move of God is not the same as participating in the move of God.)

  1. The path to deeper intimacy is best discovered on your knees in prayer.
  2. I so much want a deeper relationship with you, that I am willing to bring you to your knees so you can find the way.”

As I finally left the center of the stream I was filled with joy at the word that the Lord had given me. I looked forward with anticipation to the Kingdom Life Network Conference to begin in the evening at Grace Chapel with guests from all over the world. I knew in my spirit that God wanted to lead all of us in the conference to a deeper place with Himself and that that journey would start from a place of humility on our knees.

Lambs Among Wolves

wolf-in-sheeps-clothes

One of the most painful human experiences is to find that what you had hoped would solve your problems, would satisfy your deepest longings, would dramatically change your life, only served to allay your inner pain for a relative moment before leaving you in greater anguish and dismay than before the hoped for event. We know that no court, be it inferior or supreme, can satisfy humanity’s’ deepest needs and longings.

The true answer can only be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord, as well as Savior. Many people say, “Oh, yes, I believe in Jesus, but I will not give Him the keys to my house. I will call Him when I need Him; but I will determine what I will believe and what I will do. I will decide what I will value and what I will discard.”

And Jesus weeps over those who wish to use him but not follow him. “Father, forgive them because they do not know what they are doing.”

So, weep with Jesus over all whose present celebration will only lead to bitter disappointment. Weep for the children who will grow up in a society where values are turned upside down. (Ezekiel 9:4)

And let us weep for ourselves that we do not have a place to lay our heads. Weep that institutions and denominations and courts and governments we had thought would carry the values of Christ no longer can be trusted to do so. But also weep that we have ourselves betrayed our Lord by looking to false gods to satisfy our needs.

But do not weep for too long. For Jesus says “Lay your head on me and not on another god. And know that in the midst of the greatest storms I am resting in your boat, confident in the victorious outcome of our journey. And know that I awaken not to the fierceness of the storm, but I awaken to comfort you, my anxious children.”

Yes, do not weep for too long; let the Lord comfort you and let the dead bury the dead. It is time to follow Jesus as “lambs among wolves”. So, the world is falling apart, but we are called to go into the world carrying his love and life-transforming Gospel.

Even if we are eaten by wolves we can know that it was His plan that our death would lead to the expansion of the kingdom. We can know that wolves will taste the difference and become hungry for a personal encounter and relationship with Jesus.

And we, we can rejoice and be exceeding glad because great is our reward in heaven because we have given our lives for the salvation of even our enemies, as did the prophets before us.

At the end of the day there are three options:

  1. We can compromise the Gospel so there is nothing for the wolves to hate .
  2. We can hate and curse and damn the world which Jesus came to save, so that no one will want what we have, or
  3. We can go forth rejoicing that we are called to live and serve in such a time as this. We can rejoice that we are called to lay down our lives for the world in loving service. We can rejoice that we have the privilege to proclaim the life-changing truth that Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life and that no one is reconciled to the Father except through Him.

In all of this, we can be confident that the Holy Spirit is in us and that He will guide us moment by moment and give us exactly what we need in our hour of trial.

It cannot get better than this: If we live, we live unto the Lord. If we die, we die unto the Lord.

Blessed be the name of the Lord!

Soul Watchers

soul-watchersThe writer of the book of Hebrews 13:17 says that spiritual leaders “watch out for your souls as those who must give an account”

There are people willing to watch your weight, watch your finances, or watch your educational development but there are not many people willing to watch out for your soul.

So it was a joy today as a bishop in New Testament Fellowship of Churches to ordain six new pastors who will watch out for the souls of the people God puts under their care.

The ordination occurred at a church in Reading called “Feet On The Street.” This church founded by Marv and Beverly Zimmerman has just become a member of the New Testament Fellowship of Churches.

Those ordained were Marv and Beverly Zimmerman, Daryl and Rebecca Zimmerman, current pastors of Feet on the Street, and Matt and Megan Chambers who have just finished a pastorate in Texas and are waiting for God’s direction for a pastorate in this area.

Allan and Rose Chambers, parents of Matt Chambers have served as mentors to the Zimmermans in the development of this church. They also participated in today’s ordination service.

The Feet On The Street Church is comprised of an amazing group of young people from the inner city of Reading, first generation Christians, who are turning their world upside down for Christ.

50 Years!

50-yearsNot that I have not done it before, but today, the 50th anniversary of when Ruth and I looked into one another’s eyes and said softly but confidently, “I do take thee.. come what may.”, I will try to consolidate some of what God has shown me throughout our marriage.

I remember as a 19 year old, before Ruth and I began our relationship, that I prayed, “Lord, I want a Proverbs 31 Wife- one whose worth is far more than rubies…whose husband can have full confidence in her… who brings him good, not harm all the days of her life.” The Lord showed me later that the real problem is not in finding such a rare wife but rather the real challenge is in being the kind of husband who allows those kind of virtues to develop.

And God answered my prayer and gave me Ruth who fits the Proverbs 31 description perfectly. The end of this passage in Proverbs 31:10-31 states, “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also and he praises her.” Sometimes at the end of a meal I would say to the children, “Let us practice Proverbs 31.” At that point we would all stand up and say to Ruth, “You are Blessed.” She would always wave us down at this point, protesting that she did not want the fanfare.

I used to think if I could be a psychiatrist and pastor I would be able to be a good husband and father. But I discovered that neither of these roles made me a good partner. In fact she might have said “ Do not analyze me or do not preach to me. “ Actually I do not recall her saying either of these things for I learned early on that my role was to be by her side and not to attempt to be her therapist or her pastor. I discovered that what made our love blossom in our courtship was also required to make it continue to grow and prosper. And that was simply the gift of being present to one another; to listen carefully and lovingly and to respond always with love and concern. I recall thinking that for money I would give my clients my undivided attention for an hour. I would allow no interruptions;. I would allow no regrets from the past or anxieties about the future to intrude. I would listen as well as I knew how and I would respond in the most helpful way possible. But sometimes for the one I loved the most, I would fail to give what I gave my clients.

It never occurred to me that Ruth might at some time divorce me or that at some point I might want to divorce her. Rather our commitment was absolute and for a lifetime. Ruth’s love and commitment created a safe place for me to continue my journey of maturing. When we married I was 21 and Ruth was age 22. I did not know myself and I had a lot of blindspots. Ruth believed in me and loved me. This allowed me to take risks. And by taking risks I was able to learn and to mature. I always believed Ruth to be wise and capable; so if she affirmed me, I could more confidently take the risks of expressing myself outside of our safe relationship. If my feelings were hurt in the process of expressing myself in the marketplaces of life, I always knew that I could count on Ruth for comfort and affirmation. Her words were more important to me than an anti- anxiety or anti-depressant medication. Her words comforted and healed and encouraged me forward.

Although our relationship was secure, I learned not to take it for granted. I learned that I needed God’s grace and reminders to be present to Ruth and not to be so busy with everyone else that I had no time with her. If I was away, I called her at least once and usually twice a day, be if from Africa or India or from the nearby prison where I might be putting in a long day at work. And we both were careful to protect one another’s feelings in the public arena. I would never make Ruth the subject of a joke to my friends. And we kept short accounts. If either of us were even mildly offended by something the other had said or done, we quickly resolved it and came into peace with one another, “before the sun went down.”

And today as I reflected on our marriage, I realized that we have throughout the years practiced, Matthew 18:19-20, “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” God has made it very simple to experience His favor and blessing. If only two people come into agreement with Him and with each other, God will answer their prayers. So, as husband and wife, Ruth and I were always the “two of you on earth” coming into agreement about everything: our children, our grandchildren, our finances, our purchases, or giving, our work, our travel. And we always did this with the foundational awareness that what we were agreeing on was what God was wanting to do.

So today we celebrate the faithfulness of the Lord. He has done what He said He would do. He has given us a blessed marriage, a blessed family, a blessed church, blessed friends and even blessed enemies.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

And in conclusion we place God’s blessing on you our friends (Numbers 6:24-27, The Message) : “God bless you and keep you, God smile on you and gift you, God look you full in the face and make you prosper.”

And God promises that when this blessing is placed on His people by their elders, “I will confirm it by blessing them.”

So expect a blessing!

Funeral of David Showalter

david-showalterToday Ruth and I had the privilege of attending the funeral service in Plain City, Ohio, for David Showalter, age 96, the father of six sons and a daughter. ( A second daughter died in childhood as a result of an accident.) We have been close friends of a number of the family members.

All six sons are ordained ministers as is the son-in-law. All have been very effective and productive in their respective churches and communities.

As I reflected on this family it occurred to me that it was as though David and his wife Rhoda received God’s invitation to by faith raise up a nation for His glory.

The Showalter nation is known for its godly character, its clarity of identity and its world-changing impact. The Showalter nation has enriched the nations of the world by humbly laying aside its glory so that others might become rich

Praise be to God for the amazing legacy of this humble servant of God, David Showalter and his praying wife Rhoda who preceded him in death by four years.

Fishers of Men

fishers-of-menI feel as though I have been traveling in the biblical book of Acts this week with a flow of reports of signs, wonders and miracles. I have been talking with persons, many of whom a year and a half ago were unclear about their direction in life. During their training at Ukunda Missions School (UMS) they received input from teachers from all over the world and they received practical training in evangelism during which they saw hundreds come to the Lord through their efforts. Following the seven month training at UMS they were energized and anointed by the Holy Spirit to go to the nations of the world with the Gospel.

Ten of these first year graduates are now missionaries working from four bases established along the eastern coast of Kenya. The missionaries pray over the town, connect with the town elders and then systematically make door to door visits. They then establish house fellowships for Discovery Based Bible Study. There has been an abundant response to their efforts.

The missionaries gave reports of supernatural healing. One missionary was pondering how he could communicate with a man he just met. He noted that the man was blind and needed to be led everywhere. The missionary sensed that God wanted to heal this man. He asked the man and his family if he could pray for him, assuring them that God could heal him. I will pray in Jesus name.”

They said,“No problem, just pray.”

The missionary prayed, “Oh Lord in Jesus name, I speak healing. He is blind but I know you will heal him in Jesus name.” Although the blind man was not immediately healed, the missionary left with joy and confidence that the Lord would answer his prayer.

The next day the missionary was located by the man’s brother who informed him that his brother could now see and could move around the house to take care of his daily business without being led, for the first time in 17 years. Subsequent to this, the man who had been blind and his brother became followers of Jesus.

Another missionary on a house to house visit asked a stranger if she could speak with her. The woman responded that she did not wish to talk about Jesus. The missionary responded, “ Could you give me a minute to tell you what I wish to talk about and then you can decide if you wish to talk further based on what I have said.”

The woman agreed and the missionary shared briefly; however this led to a prolonged conversation which ended with the woman praying to receive Jesus. The missionary then prayed over her and left.

Several days later the missionary learned from a contact on the street that this new Christian was trying to find her to inform her that when she prayed to receive Christ earlier that week she had at the same time been healed of a chronic bleeding disorder of one year’s duration. The missionary had not known of the bleeding disorder at the time of the prayer for salvation.

The missionaries joyfully reported the day by direction by the Holy Spirit and empowerment to do things they had never thought possible. They pray about every step, “Lord show us which houses to visit today; show us what to say…” And God intimately guides those who cast the details of their lives upon Him.

As I spoke with the missionaries I recalled Paul’s words that “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise and He has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty…” These missionaries whom I last saw a year ago at their graduation are now mighty in word and deed under the training and guidance of the Holy Spirit. They go everywhere preaching the Gospel.

“We have the favor of God; we are called to posses the Land; we have no fear!”, proclaimed one of the missionaries.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.
