Udderly Amazing!

auctionauction 2Udderly amazing! Fifty years ago ‘two roads diverged in a yellow wood’. My brother Truman, less than a year younger than I, took the path of becoming an outstanding dairyman. I knew I could never do as well as he in farming so I took the path less traveled ( in the Hagerstown Md. community) and became a physician.

Today after 49 years of dairying Truman and Cora, from Hagerstown, Maryland, sold their 100 top producing registered and pedigreed Holsteins at the Fisher Sales Barn near Intercourse, PA. Truman and Cora cared about their cows. Cora told of going to an auction where one of their cows was being sold. As she looked down on the cattle waiting to be sold, she called out to Truman, “O there is Ilona.” At this, the cow named Ilona looked up to see where the familiar voice was coming from. She was the only cow who gave any sign of recognition. Truman and Cora know everyone of their 100 cows by name and are convinced that today as they walked into the sales barn their cows looked up from eating as they heard familiar voices.

Good cows now sell for from $2000 to $3,000 per cow. Many of the cows sold today produce 100 pounds of milk per day. The bidding on this heard was active and prices were good. One man from New York State bought 26 of the cows to get his son started in farming. Truman and Cora were pleased with the results of their sale, although they will miss their cows. They do plan to take a vacation to Florida in February which will be the sixth time they have been away from the twice daily milking experience of the last almost fifty years.

I honor my brother Truman and his wife Cora for their faithful and effective stewardship of the gifts which they received from God. I pray I may be as faithful in my area of influence as they have been in theirs.

Blessing and Bonding

Our 14th grandchild and Horeb and Sonya’s 4th child, a son, Israel Jayden Penya. Born October 26.

Mother and son are doing well. We are all rejoicing.

Often circumcision is done in the hospital away from the parents. Horeb and Sonya desired to have the circumcision of our newest grandchild, Israel Jayden Penya, be a “blessing and bonding” ceremony surrounded by the community of faith.

So at 1 pm today we had the circumcision ceremony with family and friends at LifeGate church followed by a meal. It was a deeply meaningful time. Here in this picture the father , Horeb, is bonding with his son following the circumcision.

Dr Valadimer Iakomi a skilled surgeon and family physician, who has a busy practice serving the Amish and Mennonites in the region , came to the church to perform the circumcision. Dr. Iakomi is a long time family friend originally from Moldova. He was assisted in the circumcision by Dr. Laura Viscome and by Horeb, the father

Lord, Give Us Heavenly Manna

John Harris and I arrived in Mombassa today. Drove with Vaughn and Mbali through the streets in Mombassa where a riot occurred yesterday. A Moslem cleric was killed and angry young men left the mosque where he was the senior leader and. burned a Salvation Army church about a block away. Today soldiers stood on the corner, machine guns in hand. As we drove through the streets I attempted to discreetly get some photos. But apparently I was not as subtle as I thought, for Vaughn advised me that a young man had made a threatening gesture toward me as he saw me attempting to photograph the area.

I did have a strong sense that we are in not only a natural battleground but in a spiritual war zone.

We were warmly welcomed at the Ukunda Missions School just outside Mombassa. There 23 students are just finishing the first month of a six month residential program in practical evangelism training. The students are highly motivated and unified. Just yesterday they spontaneously conducted an outreach and 15 people made decisions to become disciples of Jesus.

Today Vaughn and his team baptized six persons in the Indian Ocean. One of these had just been delivered from alcoholism. As the baptism was occurring a young man who had been with his friends at the beach came over to the ‘baptismal group’ and gave his heart to the Lord.

As I said,it is a spiritual war zone. Yes the baptism in the Indian Ocean made a pretty picture. But then you realize that as people renounce their former life with its allegiances and now covenant to follow Jesus Christ the Son of the living God, they are stirring the rage of family and friends and of Satan himself. But the God of heaven records their names as sons and daughters and releases signs and wonders and miracles including His divine protection and empowerment.

So I am on my face tonight crying out for His divine intervention. Without Him none of us can make it but with Him we can ‘plunder the Strong Man’s house. ”

So this week I and John will be teaching at the school. I have never felt such a need for ‘heavenly manna’ to share with the troops on the battlefield.

The Unoffended Life of Rose Charles

Ruth and I are participating in the Celebration of the Life of Rosé Charles at Millersville Mennonite Church. Rose died at age 42 on September 5, after dealing with cancer for 11 years.

Rose planned her funeral almost a year ago. She asked me to read Psalm 84 in the service.

Rose had wanted marriage and a family of her own but she did not become offended when this was not her lot in life. ( She is a living example of the ‘Forgotten Beatitude’ which is Jesus message to John the Baptist: “Blessed is he is not offended in me.”)

No, Rose did not become offended, rather she sought the “Lover of her Soul” and began to plan her ‘funeral service’ as a ‘Wedding Celebration’ (In fact she was buried in a wedding dress)

Ruth and I visited Rose in her home on a Sunday afternoon in mid July as we sensed that the time of transition to the next life was nearing. As we shared together that afternoon I had the thought, “How can Rose be dying when she is still so full of life and is so ‘life-giving’?

In this afternoon she told how that the day before she had gone para-sailing with a friend. ( She carried her oxygen supply with her in that she was having difficulty breathing. )

I asked her where she had gone in her para-sailing. She responded that she was 400 feet above where the river meets the bay (the Susquehanna meets the Chesapeake).

As she said this I sensed that this was a metaphor for ‘the river of her life meeting the great Bay of God’s eternal love and embrace.’

I asked her, “What was it like ‘where the river meets the bay’?”

She responded, “It was peaceful and tranquil. ”

I felt led to say at that point,” I believe God is saying that your transition from this life to the next will be peaceful and tranquil.”

And the passing was gentle as she passed from this life to the next surrounded by her family.

Rose was a beautiful example of one who allowed the dissappointments of life to make her more joyful and vibrant. She blessed and enriched the lives of multitudes. She taught us how to both live and die

I praise God for being able to participate in Rose’s wedding.

Ineffably Sublime Worship

It was not a concert so much as a worship experience. It was not a performance so much as the joyful participation of thousands of worshipers with hundreds of choir members and thousands of angels in joyful celebration of the goodness of the Lord. It was not passive observation so much as fervent declaration: “Jesus I need you…I am not a conqueror I am more than a conqueror. My walk is strong my faith is long. ”

This was the first time Carol Cymbala’s Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and Bishop Hezekiah Walker’s Love Fellowship Tabernacle Choir, both Grammy winners, had ever given a combined concert. The choirs sang together as one, led first by Bishop Hezekiah and then by Carol Cymbala.

Ruth and I were refreshed, renewed, and inspired by the concert. May God give us all a spirit of prayer and put us back on our knees as we face this difficult time in history.

In summary we value the love of our friends who made this trip possible. As one of the speakers said tonight, “We are not wrestlers; we are soldiers with shields locked together.” We cannot live life alone; we need the support of brothers and sisters of faith. So thanks, LifeGate.

As we traveled we sang the hymn, “Crown Him With Many Crowns” . This hymn has the line ” Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time; Creator of the rolling spheres ineffably sublime.” I would say in closing, “This trip was ineffably sublime. ”

Ukunda Missions Banquet

John and AlejandroAlejandro on the Right and John Harris on the left.

Tonight’s Ukunda Missions Banquet was a sucesss. Approximately 100 persons enjoyed Kenyan food, worshipped and responded with their prayers and financial supprt to the Ukunda Missions Vision. The banquet was unique in that attendees received prayers and ministry from the Ukunda Missions Team.

Elisa Martin , Vaughn and Ilona’s 16 year old daughter, led in worship and performed a number of her own compositions.

Vaughn told how God had directed him at the age of 19 to purchase land near the coast of the Indian Ocean to develop a school to train pastors as missionaries to other African and to Asian countries. Constriction on the first phase of the project is nearing completion. Over 100 persons have applied for this 6 month intensive residential training program. Classes will begin September 9th for 25 select students.

Vaughn then invited his ministry partners to testify, pray and minister to the banquet attendees. Alejandro Colindras had come from New York just to attend the banquet. John Harris came from North Carolina. Both men will be teaching in the Ukunda Missions

God’s Love in Darkest Hour

Nickel MinesMonday night was quite a night. Marie Monville spoke at the Naaman Center Spring Banquet at Hershey Farm Restaurant at Strasburg, PA. In 2006, Marie’s then husband committed the horrific crime known around the world as the Nickel Mines Amish School House Tragedy. Marie, who wanted to be simply a good wife and mother was suddenly propelled into world view. She said that in high school she probably would have been voted, “Most likely to be forgotten.”

Marie’s presentation focused on how God walked with her through the darkest and most painful days imaginable. She did not focus on the evil which Satan had inspired but rather on the glorious faithfulness of a heavenly Father who tenderly responded to her anguished cries and entreaties.

I was left with the thought, “How would you know how deep God’s love is unless you went through something deeply painful and found that God’s love was deeper still. And how would you know that God was God of the valleys unless you went through the valley of suffering and found that He truly was with you.” I had wanted to know that “Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so.” But He responds, ” Yes, the Bible tells you of My love, but I want to write my love on the pages of your heart as you go through life’s varied and often painful experiences.

At the end of the evening I was asked to have the closing prayer. Instead I asked Marie to pray over the audience for all those whose hearts were crying out, “Lord, if you could meet Marie in her darkest hour and turn it into light, would you meet me now in my hour of difficulty and transform my mess into a glorious testimony of what God can do and not another account of the devils’ destruction.”

PTL India Church Dedication

India 1Worshipers listen intently during dedication of new church building on outskirts if Coimbatore. The congregation was overjoyed to finally have their own building after ten years. Without their own building they are more easily driven from an area by their opponents. I was asked as chair of PTL India Partners to dedicate the building this evening.

More than 1500 people flocked the streets of Elizabethtown for the passion play last evening. Many of them knew the shepherd whom they followed through the streets to the place of his crucifixion. A high point for me was meeting a number of persons whom I have learned to know through the Naaman Center. These friends on their journey out of addictions found themselves swept tonight toward the Man on the middle cross.

Stage V Faith for Stage IV Problems

I am praying for a Stage V faith for Stage IV problems.

Two days ago I received a request from a friend from another state as to whether I could go to a nearby town to pray for a retired pastor who was suffering from stage IV cancer. This pastor wanted ‘healing prayer’. I responded that I would go this afternoon to pray for this pastor.

I awoke this morning with the impression that I needed a ‘Stage V’ faith to deal with ‘Stage IV’ problems.

However when I had completed my 8 hours of working in the prison I found that I only had a Stage III faith, not enough to deal with a Stage IV cancer. Therefore, I decided to postpone my visit to the pastor and to strengthen myself in the Lord and to visit the pastor tomorrow.

Shortly after making my decision to delay the visit, I found that I had an email informing me that the pastor ‘had gone to be with The Lord.’

As I now reflect on my day, I realize that many of the problems I dealt with throughout the day were Stage IV in their severity. They had the capacity to destroy life. And without the miracle of God’s intervention, devastation would reign. I praise God that He did give me the faith ( I think it was Stage V level) to deal with one problem after another and to see His hand at work. However, enough problems still remain unresolved that I know tomorrow must also be bathed in prayer lest the problems become fatal. But thanks be to God that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.
